AUTHOR INTERIORS'
MISSION AND VALUES
MISSION AND VALUES

With the Covid-19 crisis keeping the vast majority of us indoors and disrupting business, now seems to be better than ever to take the time to press pause and reflect on what we strive to do at AUTHOR and why, as well as taking a look at what some of our makers are able to do in the meantime during this lock down.

Our mission at AUTHOR is and always will be to support British design and craftsmanship. We do this by showcasing exquisite and unique furniture and interior accessory pieces handcrafted by skilled and talented artisans across the British Isles. We display these exceptionally well-made designs in our inspiring collections and tell the stories behind the pieces, celebrating their provenance and explaining why they are so unique and special.

We advocate the principles of Slow Design, focusing on a holistic approach to design and the ethical, sustainable and social impacts around it. We reject the vagaries and unregulated labour processes of mass production and encourage customers to buy less with more consideration; to embrace a mindful consumption attitude towards the pieces they collect in their homes.

“BUY LESS WITH MORE CONSIDERATION.”

We believe that makers, designers and artisans should be paid and treated fairly for their craft and skill. We do this by having a transparent, flexible and open relationship with our makers and ensuring they are paid appropriately for their work. By investing in these high-quality British made designs, we can create a future in design with positive societal and environmental impacts.

Wendy Morrison

We focus on small runs of exquisite, bespoke furniture and interior accessories that are 100% designed and made in Britain, with the exception of our Wendy Morrison rugs which are designed by Wendy in Scotland and hand-tufted in India under the GoodWeave Label. GoodWeave is a global, not-for-profit organisation which operates an international certification programme, working to end illegal child labour in the rug industry and to offer educational opportunities to children in South Asia.

Each piece in our collection is handcrafted individually with skill, attention to detail and love for every customer, often as limited editions or to personal customisations, meaning that our designs are truly exclusive and rare. They are made to such a high quality and with the finest, responsibly sourced materials that these pieces, if well looked after, can be kept and loved for a lifetime. They become future heirlooms that can be passed on through generations, ensuring a less harmful impact on the environment.

Longer lead times can occur, especially during this Covid-19 crisis, as many of these objects are made to order; however, by turning our backs on mass production, we are investing in and supporting exceptional designers and makers across Britain, many of whom produce on their own. These are the makers and small business owners who will need the support once we are eventually out of this lock down.

Hardy Chair in the making by Another Country

Some of our makers are able to continue working during this crisis, albeit at a slower production time. Another Country, are still producing their beautiful furniture pieces, as you can see with the images above of their Hardy Chair being constructed, which holds the Design Guild Mark. Fritz Fryer Lighting, are  also continuing to create their gorgeous lighting designs with some of their lighting specialists even making at home which shows their dedication and passion for their craft.

Many of our other makers have had to stop production in line with the government guidelines, such as Porta Romana,  and so it is out of their hands. Nevertheless, we are still able to take orders and offer design consultancy if you would like a bespoke piece made. These pieces will then be made once our makers are able to continue production so please do contact us if you are interested in any of the exquisite and unique furniture and home accessory items in our collection.

If you would like any styling advice or consultation then please do get in touch. We can arrange a Skype, Facetime or Whatsapp call to help you with any of your design or styling questions; whether it is choosing a paint colour for your hallway or rearranging a corner in your sitting room, we would be more than happy to help.
