The Beauty of Collaboration
The Beauty of Collaboration

At AUTHOR, we strive to champion independent makers and artisans working in Britain who produce their work sustainably and with longevity in mind. Inspired by their exquisite furniture and home accessories, we also commission our makers and suppliers to handcraft our own designs for our AUTHOR’s Own collection, utilising their specialised skills and knowhow to create the perfect piece we haven’t been able to source. We want to shout about these amazing, talented artists and designers we have been working with to create our one-of-a-kind designs to show our support and appreciation.

LONG LASTING FURNITURE

Mergus Chair

Our AUTHOR’s Own collection features a range of furniture pieces, particularly chairs, produced in Scotland by fantastic fine furniture making companies. Charlotte James is a renowned furniture company based in Edinburgh who are known for crafting furniture for the trade industry.

We have been working with them collaboratively to create stunning pieces for commercial projects but also for domestic settings. Our Arkham Sofa as well as our Wilf, Charterhouse, Monty, Mergus, Helm and Mary Velvet Chairs are all handcrafted to order by their talented furniture makers and upholsterers meaning they are made with sustainability and a slow design approach.

Hailes Stool

We feature luxury ottomans and table stools in our collections such as the Gymkhana Stool, also beautifully made by Charlotte James, as well as the Hailes Stool, crafted by Clock House Furniture who are based in East Lothian. Clock House Furniture, who also make our Dundas Stools, Kirkwall and Sarah Chairs, have been creating luxury furniture for 30 years and is run by husband and wife team, Nick and Priscilla Parry.

Like Charlotte James, their skilled and clever team create pieces that are designed to last as future heirlooms that can be passed down in families for generations if well looked after.

Combining different specialties and skillsets together

Metal Tusk Wall Light
Leather wrapped Tusk Wall Light

To craft our exquisite furniture and homeware pieces, we bring a number of British based makers together on pieces to realise our designs. We use local metalworkers and painters to make the stunning metal base and finishes of our Tusk Wall Lights; however, for our leather wrapped finish of the wall light, we get the metal base wrapped in British bridle leather by the talented Colin Campbell and his incredible team at McRostie of Glasgow in their Renfrewshire workshop. By bringing these different skillsets together, we can learn from each other and create lasting, beautiful pieces that demonstrate the beauty of British craftsmanship.

Mary Velvet Chair

Our signature Mary Velvet Chair is a special design we hold dear as it one of our very first collaborative designs. It features the gorgeous Mary Velvet Fabric, designed and digitally printed by Blackpop in Derbyshire with environmentally friendly inks. Blackpop are an independent label who create unique, designer wallpapers, fabrics and upholstered furniture for the luxury market.

Queen Mary I portrait from the National Gallery

The Mary design is part of Blackpop’s ‘Tudors Deconstructed’ collection which was produced in collaboration with the National Portrait Gallery, mixing details and motifs from the Gallery’s 16th century portraits of the Tudors. We love the contrast of the orange and reds with the blues of Mary which can been seen in the portrait of Queen Mary I and have paired it with a cherry red wool piping to finish this gorgeously unique armchair.

Red Squirrel & Peacock Footstool

Our latest collaboration with Bristol based artist and designer, Jacky Puzey, who specialises in digital embroidery, is the stunning Peacock & Red Squirrel Footstool. This sumptuous footstool embraces the rich imagery of classical landscapes and the grounds of decaying mansions with fruit, fauna and animals roaming wild. The red squirrel has a luxurious tail of faux fur, and the Peacock’s embroidered tail is created from embroidery, appliqué silk organza and peacock feathers. Jacky embroiders the detailing onto the gorgeous velvet and uses local upholsterers in Bristol to finish the piece.

No piece too small

Bone China Bowl
Shot Pot Candle

We also collaborate with makers on smaller, intricate pieces that are perfect as unique gifts. From our elegant bone china range handmade by Emma Alington, to our Shot Pot candles that are made by combining the skills of aromatherapy candlemakers, Wildheart Organics, and ceramic artist Myer Halliday, all of these beautiful pieces are handmade by talented British based makers who are very skilled in their specialised crafts.

Alpaca Wool Throw

For our Mohair and Alpaca Wool Throws, we work with one of the last remaining vertical woollen mills in Britain, Abraham Moon and Sons, who have been making wool yarns and fabrics in Britain for fashion and interior houses for over 180 years. These throws are perfect for snuggling under during the colder months and look beautiful when draped over the arm of a chair or sofa. The Alpaca Wool Throw can also double as a wrap, making them truly versatile. Our AUTHOR leather labels for the throws are debossed by hand in-house.

We are proud to champion and support the work of small, independent makers in Britain. This collaborative work with all these amazing British based designers and artisans allows us to realise ideas and learn from each other, resulting in pieces that are truly beautiful, exciting and innovative, marrying traditional craft with contemporary style.
