Fiona McTaggart

A Dorset-based artist and surface pattern designer who’s driven by a passion and profound connection with the environment.

ART FROM LIFE

With a Fine Art background, Fiona’s creative process is a meticulous exploration of nature’s intricate forms and qualities. She begins by crafting observational collages from hand-painted paper, which are then digitally transformed into seamless, detailed patterns. Each piece becomes a narrative, offering a glimpse of the world through Fiona's unique perspective.

Fiona’s art is deeply inspired by everyday moments shared with her children, transforming these intimate experiences into vibrant works born from direct observation. Fiona ‘draws’ with scissors, balancing spontaneity and precision. This intuitive process creates an immediacy that mirrors her emotional connection to the objects she portrays and the unfolding narratives within them. Her work radiates a sense of wonder, offering a dual perspective—the world seen through both a parent's and a child’s eyes, united in discovery. Viewers are invited to pause, appreciate the beauty in the ordinary, and find joy in the simple, mindful acts of being present and connected with nature.

Fiona finds joy in every stage of her creative process. Once the children are tucked in and the house falls silent, she immerses herself in a sea of hand-painted paper, carefully building her collages layer by layer. Through these intricate compositions, she transforms her art into immersive patterns designed to inspire calm and reflection. Fiona’s work serves as a soothing escape from the stresses of modern life, offering a reminder of nature’s healing power and encouraging a deeper connection with the world around us.

Fiona's creative journey has always been concerned with the human connection with nature. While studying at The Glasgow School of Art, she was drawn to land art, sharing a similar desire to frame nature. Her work is also influenced by William Morris and the Arts and Crafts Movement, particularly their emphasis on craftsmanship and nature-inspired design. After years of teaching art, Fiona has returned to her own creative practice as a surface pattern designer, discovering it as the ideal medium to fully express her artistic vision.
