Furniture maker, Aymeric Renoud, handcrafts furniture in his Dundee workshop with a new material he has created called draff that is creatively made from local brewery and distillery waste.
A new and exciting material in furniture design crafted by furniture designer and maker Aymeric Renoud.
Originally from Marboz, France, Aymeric's career in 3D manufacturing began at Moissonnier, a renowned furniture house, where he began his training as a traditional cabinetmaker, later going on to achieve a technical degree in furniture making in Lyon. Aymeric moved to Dundee to study Interior and Environmental Design at Duncan of Jordanstone in 2013. After graduating in 2015, he remained at the design college as the Designer in Residence for two years.
With a passion and interest in eco conception, Aymeric started to explore the possibilities of reusing the wastage from alcohol production specifically from the local craft breweries and distilleries he frequented in the Tayside and Angus area. After several years of research and development, Aymeric opened Draff Studio in November 2017, and pioneers sustainable furniture design with the creation of his new draff material. From his Dundee workshop, Aymeric creates bespoke pieces of furniture and is frequently involved with local projects as well as distillery and brewery collaborations. Lee Johnstone joined Draff Studio in May 2020 and works alongside Aymeric in a part-time capacity.
Sustainability in furniture design and collaborating with designers who are at the forefront of new eco and ethical making practices is important to us here at AUTHOR. Visually seeing the grain from the barley as well as the gin botanicals within Aymeric's original furniture pieces constantly reminds you of their previous life. We cannot wait to see what future designs Aymeric makes with his pioneering and environmentally friendly material.
