Isabelle Moore

Isabelle Moore works with a range of materials from her workshop on the east coast of Scotland.

Isabelle Moore teaches furniture making courses, exhibits her work widely and has had her work represented in many acclaimed collections at home and abroad.

After studying Furniture Design at the renowned Parnham College in Dorset, Isabelle has honed her craft of creating chair structures and contemporary seating. She develops her ideas by working through drawings, models, prototyping, and fabrication. Each piece is shaped by a love of materials and a fascination with the routes revealed by cross-media manipulation and geometry with a fusion of structure, craft skills, and body centred design. Her work is created in the exploratory environment of artist residencies and in her Edinburgh studio.

Growing up, reading and making things was a major part of Isabelle's life. She never intended to be a furniture maker as a child but notes that there are four generations of chair makers in her family tree - so it just might be in the genes, well that and her indisputable talent and craftsmanship.

She takes inspiration from a life spent looking at objects in art galleries and museums as well as a privileged career working alongside other amazing makers. Having full rein of wood, metal, and ceramics studios over the years has enabled her to explore diverse media and material techniques, which are all reflected in the work she makes. She is utterly absorbed in the whole development process of making and passionate about creating new forms. When one piece is completed, there is always another waiting in the wings for her to create.

Previously, Isabelle has received the International Contemporary Furniture Fair New York ‘Offsite’ Award, the International Design Resource Award for work in recycled materials, and closer to home she has received the Visual Arts Scotland SSWA Award.

Author's Choice

We love that Isabelle has created much of her work using recycled materials. It is one of the reasons we have included her Woven Oak Chair in our collection. The woven seat of the chair is made from woven polyamide, which is otherwise used for marine line for catching tuna and shark. Not only that, the chair itself is beautiful in its design. The polyamide seat gives the sitter a comfortable spring and the backrest is stunning with its triangular detailing. The ebonised oak finish of the wood accentuates the neutral, soothing grey of the woven seat.

We admire her passion for handmade seating and her dedication to her craft. Her attention for detail is phenomenal and we are very honoured to have her work as part of our collection.
