Creating an elegant bedroom is by no means as easy as you might think. It might take a bit of time to get things right, but there’s no harm in moving things around until you get there. An elegant bedroom should be soothing and rejuvenating; a place to really rest after a long day at work or to whittle away a lazy Sunday morning. Plus, we’re keen on incorporating fine craftsmanship and decadent materials too. Here’s our top ten tips at AUTHOR for creating a luxury bedroom that will make sleeping a decadent experience.
1. Declutter
The first step is always to declutter. A messy bedside table or vanity unit is a sure way to make you feel a little bit stressed out and make the whole bedroom look a little untidy. Purchase some organisers to store away any unnecessary cosmetics or clothing and fold your clothes away neatly – the Marie Kondo method really does work a treat. Store watches in a watch box and use marble trays to keep precious jewellery together on a dressing table or bedside table.
2. Choose calming colours
Your boudoir should be calming, but it should also be reflective of your personality and the colours that personally make you feel at ease. That’s different for everyone. Whether you’re into light and detailed or dark and sultry, remember that it’s your room and you need to feel happy with it. Once you’ve chosen the colour, it’s all down to the bedroom styling to finish of the elegant look.
3. Don’t hold back on the window treatment
One of the most overlooked features in a bedroom, or a home in general, are the window treatments. Whether it’s made with sheer fabric or a more luxurious linen or velvet, drapery is one of the best ways to pull a master suite together. Curtain rods should be beautifully made and not an afterthought in your design decisions, while fabrics can make a statement or blend into the background. Shop our range of luxury fabrics to find the right colour and pattern for you.
4. Indulge in opulent lighting
Opting for elegant lighting will bring that same feeling to the room overall. Replace standard lighting with a statement-making hanging light or a glamorous chandelier for the ultimate luxury look. When it comes to bedside options, choose a matching pair that make an impact. The Zebedee Ceramic Table Lamp features large open arms and is hand painted with gold balls. Filled with charm and personality, these lamps are ideal for a sweet yet stylish bedroom but if in doubt, you could opt for wall lights instead.
5. Add a stylish seating option (even if it won’t get used!)
While the bed frame is obviously important, so are the seating options, even if they will rarely get used as a functional piece of furniture. Purchase a statement occasional chair such as the regal Helm Chair which features a high, straight back as well as neutral tones, allowing it to fit perfectly with the rest of the room aesthetic. Aside from this, don’t clutter the room with too much furniture, instead let each piece – bed, vanity unit, chair – stand on its own.
6. Choose bedside tables with function and style
Your bedside table is likely the first and last thing you see each day, so choose a piece that will last the test of time – you don’t want it to irritate you at all. Make sure your choice fits seamlessly with the rest of the room and if in doubt, go for something a little more pared back. Bedside tables should be able to store those nighttime essentials while also looking sleek. Our Sugarcube Side Tables are a great option for a sophisticated look. The coloured triangular shaped glass pieces that meet at the drawer handle reflect the space around them beautifully and add depth and interest to the room.
7. Pile on the pillows
Overfill your throw pillows to make them as plush as possible. Think about the experience that you would want from a luxury hotel and transfer it to your bedroom. Sumptuous hotels always have plenty of plump cushions that make you want to dive right in. Add some decorative cushions and tie these in to your other fabric choices. A few opulent details on the textiles will work wonders to add something a little extra to the room.
8. Invest in a luxury throw
Turn your bedroom into a bonafide retreat by adding luxury materials such as cashmere and mohair. The perfect addition, an opulent throw will look gorgeous draped over your sofa, chair or bed and will be warm and cosy when you need to snuggle in to them. We love our Nuance Ombre Islay Sunset Cashmere Throws – they are aesthetically pleasing with their stunning and warm colour gradients from fringe to fringe but are also marvellously soft to touch. Cashmere is one of the most prized and coveted yarns out there so make sure you indulge in it for your elegant home!
9. Add artwork
Consider adding a few accent pieces of artwork to your room to finish off the look but don’t go too crazy as you don’t want too many distractions. A couple of simple pieces, elegantly framed, will help to add some personality to your room while retaining the simple sense of style. Avoid clashing colours and instead pull out the accent colours in your interior design scheme.
10. Finish the look with fresh flowers
Bedroom styling is all about those final touches. Adding a few plants and some fresh flowers will help your bedroom make the final leap to luxury. Roses and tulips always work well and we’re truly in love with peony season. Place them in a large vase like our versatile Vivien Vase or separate them into smaller sections and pop them into smaller ornamental containers.
